A checklist for your next property review

Set aside time before an emergency to walk around your property from safe, accessible ground. Bring a phone or notebook and record what needs attention. Use the list below to organize observations and questions for your local fire service or contractor.

Check the house

The following review points draw on CAL FIRE's home hardening guidance. Construction changes and work at height need appropriate professional help.

  • Roof and gutters: Note visible debris and arrange safe inspection or cleaning.
  • Vents: Locate attic and crawl space vents; ask about ember resistance and ventilation.
  • Doors and openings: Look for damaged seals or gaps that need a contractor's attention.
  • Decks: Check for combustible items and debris beneath and around them.

Check the area closest to the home

CAL FIRE recommends reducing combustible material in the first five feet around buildings and decks. Confirm local requirements and how they apply to your site.

  • Record combustible mulch, stored items and accumulated dead vegetation near the building.
  • Review where a fence or gate connects to the house.
  • Choose suitable locations for firewood and other stored material using current local guidance.
  • Include regular upkeep in the plan so cleared areas stay maintained.

Check your evacuation preparations

The U.S. Fire Administration recommends local alerts, planned exit routes, prepared supplies and practice. Include everyone in the household, pets and anyone who needs extra assistance.

  • Confirm how you receive official local warnings.
  • Review your routes and how to open a gated exit.
  • Prepare the household's supplies and contact plan.
  • Practice leaving and resolve any problem that could delay you.

Make the next action clear

For each observation, record an action, the person responsible and a date to review it. A useful entry is specific: “Arrange a contractor visit to assess the attic vents” or “Review emergency contacts with everyone this weekend.” Separate routine upkeep from work that needs a professional assessment.
