Start with the building and its surroundings
Home hardening and defensible space are foundational, not competitors to an active system. CAL FIRE describes building-focused work across roofs, vents, windows, and exterior features. For any additional product, compare three things: what it physically covers, what must still be working during an event, and what needs to happen before evacuation. The following distinctions describe operating approaches, not independent product ratings.
Exterior sprinklers
A spray system applies water to reached surfaces. Ask the supplier about tested spray coverage, water demand, supply duration, triggering, power requirements, and operation in wind. Installed hardware alone does not establish sustained coverage when those dependencies change.
Gels and retardant coatings
These approaches depend on application to the relevant surfaces and on the coating remaining effective. Ask for product-specific evidence, application requirements, reapplication intervals, environmental limitations, and material compatibility. Do not treat different formulations as interchangeable.
Manual structure wraps
A wrap may cover broad areas once properly installed, but it requires installation labor and a secure perimeter. Ask who installs it, how long the specific property takes, how projections and openings are handled, and when work must stop for evacuation. Never interpret a wrap as permission to remain during a warning.
Automated shutters and vent closures
These act on particular openings. Evaluate which openings are covered, activation requirements, maintenance, and implications for normal ventilation and emergency egress with qualified professionals. Closing an opening is not the same as enclosing the whole exterior.
Detection-only systems
A detector supplies information or a trigger; it does not itself create physical coverage. Ask how alerts reach the intended recipient, what happens during communications failure, and which action follows an alert. Follow official evacuation instructions regardless of private sensor status.
The PyroVeil design target
PyroVeil aims to combine installed storage with whole-building coverage and dry pneumatic deployment. These are concept targets. They do not establish better protection than existing products. No product certification, comparative fire test, or guaranteed performance is claimed.
Before an installed blanket could be evaluated as a practical option, its packaging, deployment, building fit, wind resistance, material behavior, perimeter coverage, inspection, and reset process would need physical evidence.
A useful purchasing question
Ask: what was actually tested, on what configuration, under which conditions, and with which limitations? Separate supplier claims from independently measured results. Do not assume an insurance discount or coverage approval from product marketing.
